Severino,Claudia; Elizondo,Rafael; Álvaro,Juan E; Oyanedel,Eduardo.

Field Testing of Tomato Chilling Tolerance under Varying Light and Temperature Conditions Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Elizondo,Rafael; Oyanedel,Eduardo.
Chilling tolerance is a desirable trait in commercial tomato varieties, in order to extend the growing season and geographic range. Two Nearly Isogenic Lines (NILs) with introgressions in chromosome 2 and 3 of Solanum habrochaites S. Knapp & D.M. Spooner, a cold-resistant wild tomato, were evaluated in the field. Four plantings were established between 21 August and 2 October 2006 (day 232 and 274). Throughout the experiment the heat sum was interpreted using air temperature to calculate growing degree days (base 12 °C) and chilling hours (below 12 °C), with the daily light integral calculated as global solar radiation. The relative post-transplant growth rate, fruit set and yield, were evaluated over two successive 10-d periods. Chilling tolerance...

Storage, size and vigor of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds (Persea americana Mill.) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Gálvez-Cendegui,Luisa; Peñaloza,Patricia; Oyanedel,Eduardo; Castro,Mónica.
Avocado seeds present high size variability. Larger seeds, such those of the ‘Esther’ variety, are preferred when nurse seeds are used. Even though they are considered recalcitrant seeds, they are stored for propagation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of three storage periods and three sizes of ‘Esther’ avocado seeds on vigor, in terms of electrolyte leakage, and seedling length and diameter. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized factorial design. The factors were time in storage (10, 30 and 100 d at 5 °C and 80% relative humidity) and seed size (small, medium and large). Electrolyte leakage was evaluated as a measure of seed vigor, growth and later development of the...
